International Terrorism by Non-State Actors

Catalog description

Surveys of the non-state terrorism, both internationally and domestically, the different types of non-state terrorism, and the ideological and ideological goals of non-state terrorism. The objective of the course is to familiarize students with the phenomenon of international terrorism conducted by organizations active transnationally. Topics include: the political objectives of terrorism; dissident terrorism; the economic effects of terrorism; the role of ideology and religion; insurgency and civil war in terrorism; organized crime and terrorism; the role of technology; counterterrorism, homeland security and law; and future trends. Students utilize analytical literature addressing roots, stated objectives and methods used by international terrorist groups, and original statements and writings by leaders and ideologues of terrorist groups. Students assess the threat posed by non-state terrorism and methods for combating this threat.
