Catalog description

Methods, institutions and practices that allow nations to translate foreign policy objectives and strategies into practical actions, and how practitioners adjust and refine foreign policy in response to the events that influence outcomes. The course is based on the diplomacy perspective of a practitioner. The emphasis is on foreign policy practices and structures of the United States of America, but the seminar has broad applicability to the study of the diplomatic practice of other nations that operate in an analogous domestic political environment of separation of powers, relative openness and freedom of expression.
