Catalog description

The course explores modern history, political, social, economic security developments in South Asia. It addresses South Asian states experience with democracy and dictatorship, nation-building as well as regional dynamics, conflict, security arrangements and cooperation among South Asian nations. Regional events are discussed in their historical contexts and such themes as civil war and economic development, sovereignty and nationhood, self-determination and interstate war, economic aid and poverty, authoritarianism and democratization, corruption and nuclear power, resource conflict and civil conflicts, border and water distribution disputes, insurgencies and reconciliation are addressed. The course discusses political systems and cultures of all regional countries: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Madives and Afghanistan; it also reviews connections and influences that Tibet and Myanmar share with South Asia.
