Catalog description

The course explores history and political, social, economic security developments in Latin America. It addresses Latin America's experience with democracy and dictatorship, relations with the United States and world's leading military and economic powers, nation building in Latin America as well as regional dynamics south and central America and in the Caribbean, conflict, security arrangements and cooperation among Latin American countries and changes and initiatives in regional integration. Regional events are discussed in their historical contexts and such themes as group identity and environmentalism, sovereignty and nationhood, self-determination and territorial conquest, economic development and poverty, authoritarianism and democratization, corruption and organized crime, revolution and counter-revolution, civil conflicts, insurgencies and reconciliation are addressed.
