Catalog description

The course explores history, political, social, economic and security developments in Africa. It addresses Africa's experience with democracy and dictatorship, nation-building as well as regional dynamics, conflicts, security arrangements and cooperation among African nations and changes and initiatives in regional integration. Regional events are discussed in their historical contexts and such themes as decolonization and economic development, sovereignty and nationhood, self-determination and interstate war, economic aid and poverty, authoritarianism and democratization, corruption and organized crime, racism and civil conflicts, insurgencies and reconcilation are addressed.
