Foundations in Cyber Law and Cybercrime

Catalog description

The computer has become a common toll in crime. This course examines the nature and scope of cybercrime and the legal response to high-tech crime including the challenges presented to legal frameworks. The lectures and readings identify and discuss core cybercrime issues and the prevailing legal authorities statutes, regulations, policies that address these issues. The course also examines developing trends in cybercrime and cyberlaw. Students learn about the global nature of computer crime and examine national and international laws, regulations and agreements that govern computer crime including computer investigations, prosecution and defense. The course encourages analytical thinking and reasoning about computer crime topics and relevant legal issues so that students can identify, analyze and solve problems in the continually emerging cybercrime and cyberlaw issues and trends. The course explores legal responses to cybercrime including regulatory and law enforcement initiatives aimed at combating computer crime. This course provides the student with an ability to perform basic forensic techniques and use appropriate media analysis software. Knowledge of the security, structure and protocols of network operating systems and devices will be covered as students learn to gather evidence in a networked environment and to image and restore evidence properly without destroying its value. The student will learn and practice gaining evidence from a computer system while maintaining its integrity and a solid chain of custody. Within the laboratory, the student will gain hands-on experience in the use of current investigative tools. The students will classify and arrange forensics data based on its value to the case. Credit will be earned once between CJ341 and CYBR 341.
