Advanced Molecular Techniques

Catalog description

This upper level course provides students with the opportunity to learn and apply the scientific concepts behind investigating DNA in medical and forensic situations using advanced molecular technologies. Lecture topics will cover technical components as well as limitations of these technologies. Ethical questions regarding the application of advanced technologies in medicine will be discussed. Skills required for the successful management of a molecular laboratory will also be covered. Lectures are supported by weekly hands-on laboratory exercises that teach the strengths and weaknesses of applying molecular technologies to biological materials. Students will design a research question at the end of the semester and apply the appropriate molecular technologies to answer their question. 3 Lecture hours. 3 Lab hours. Prerequisites: Grade of D- or higher in CH 200 or BI 303. Offered: Fall.
