Molecular Forensics

Catalog description

This course gives students with an interest in criminal investigation the opportunity to learn and apply the scientific concepts behind using DNA in forensic examinations. Lecture topics will cover currently accepted molecular technologies as well as approaches being researched for future application. Current events and invited speakers will examine DNA court admissibility and privacy laws. Genealogical practices being applied to suspect identification such as Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy, FIGG, will be introduced. Lectures are supported by weekly laboratory exercises that teach the strengths and weaknesses of applying molecular techniques to biological evidence. Each student will gain hands on experience with the isolation of DNA and its molecular manipulation and analysis, culminating in the examination of their own FBI CODIS DNA profiles. 3 Lecture hours. 3 Lab hours. Prerequisites: BI 101 or BI 122 or CH 100. Grade of D- or higher. Offered: Fall, Spring.
