Professional Practice and Reflection in the Built Environment

Catalog description

This professional practice course is designed to help civil engineering and construction management students connect academic knowledge with real-world practice in the built environment. Utilizing a current or previous internship experience, students will work through guided reflection on their professional experiences, students will examine how classroom concepts translate into workplace applications and how practical engagement enhances their technical, managerial, and interpersonal skills. The course encourages students to think critically about their roles as life-long learners and problem-solvers as they navigate contemporary challenges in engineering and construction practice. Course requirements include a reflective diary, a final paper, and presentation. These deliverables will allow students to evaluate the achievement of their learning objectives, identify valuable skills gained, and assess how their experience supports their professional and career development. Students will also reflect on the broader impact of their work within the built environment and the responsibilities of professionals in shaping sustainable, effective, and ethical practices. By the end of this course, a student will have completed an internship, either during the semester taking this course or during the summer prior to taking this course, and complete and complete their guided reflection through multiple assignments. An internship experience will need to be approved prior to enrolling in the course. Restriction: Department approval. Offered: Fall, Spring.
