A Christian Reading of Western Lit: Reformation to 20th Century

This course integrates three streams of traditional “subjects”—history, literature, and theology—through reading, discussion and writing. Because all knowledge and thought are never truly independent (only God creates ex nihilo), we discover the development of ideas through reading primary sources from the English Reformation through the 20th century, a span of 400 years in the history of Western Civilization in which Europeans moved from Christianity as the dominant worldview to the pluralistic ‘market place of ideas’ we see in the West today. New freedoms and forms of government are birthed and contrasted with the oppression of the masses by tyrants. Of course, all discussion will be framed by our context of the 21st century and the authority of Scripture. (This course is also offered through our concurrent credit program.)
