This course provides an overview of the reformation of the American nation. It begins with the Civil War and its social, cultural, and political repercussions. It tracks the effects of immigration and internal migrations, the closure of the West, and increasing urbanization and industrialization. We will look at the rise of the Federal government from the initial trust busting of the progressives to the modern corporate statism. Aside from the usual politics, culture, economics, and wars, the course explores the changing role of religion in the private and public life of the country against a growing diversity of practices and a rising tide of secularism. (This course is also offered through our concurrent credit program.)
