Elementary Education Mathematics

Catalog description

Provides future elementary educators with the necessary content understanding and teaching pedagogy to be successful teachers of mathematics. To do this, the course develops an understanding of the history of mathematics education nationally and globally including the introduction of national standards, critically examines productive and unproductive beliefs about teaching and doing mathematics, and provides students with opportunities to build conceptual understanding of essential elementary mathematics content through exploration and practice of effective teaching methodologies. Mathematics topics included in this course include number systems, number sense, algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics and probability with an emphasis on application in elementary classrooms.
