Catalog description

Investigation of issues related to military organizations, military life, and their relation to society as viewed through a sociological lens. Sociological theories, concepts, empirical research, as well as documentary films, personal accounts and other cultural artifacts are used to investigate the military as a social institution where people, other institutions, societies, and cultures intersect. These intersections and the tensions and conflict that often arise from them are the basis of this course. Topics include military organization, recruitment, socialization, and change. Special attention is given to the dynamics of returning to civilian life.
