Reviews the basics of language acquisition theory and explores how to translate those theories into practical strategies for teaching content in culturally sensitive ways using the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) standards, and the Common Core. Addresses basic strategies for incorporating academic vocabulary into content instruction and assessment of language proficiency. Every educator shares the responsibility for ensuring that students who are in the process of learning English have every opportunity to increase their understanding of the content. This requires understanding the cultural context of each student’s background and the level of their progress in English-language acquisition.
