Catalog description

Build on the core skills of working in clay with a focus on wheel throwing methods. Students will practice centering and opening various weights of clay on the potter’s wheel, collaring and shaping to throw specific forms such as a tall cylinder, bowls, plates, and cups, applying texture to a piece on the wheel, and trimming a finished foot on a thrown object. Instruction and exercises will also include altering forms made on the wheel, pulling and attaching handles, principal glazing practices, and identifying formal elements of pottery through discussion and self-critique. (Prerequisite: 10-815-200, Ceramics 1: Hand Building with a "C" or better.)
