7315. 3 hours. This course examines the intersection of law and family. In particular it examines how the law creates (and limits) family relationships, regulates their dissolution, and defines the rights and responsibilities of family members. The course focuses on marriageand dissolution of marriage, including who may marry, family privacy, allocation of rights and duties within marriage, and issues incident to dissolution of marriage (property division, spousal and child support, adoption, assisted reproduction, and child custody). The course will also include discussion of jurisdiction, legal status of unmarried parents and their children, the role of the divorce lawyer, and divorce mediation. This includes a research segment. Prerequisite(s) Property or Property I.
