(3330) 3 hours. This course provides an introduction to the principles and practices of firearm and toolmark examination in forensic science. Students learn methods for identifying, documenting, and comparing marks made by firearms, ammunition, and tools. Topics include firearm function and classification, toolmark pattern recognition, evidence collection and preservation, and the use of comparison microscopy. Emphasis is placed on the scientific foundations, interpretation of class and individual characteristics, and legal considerations related to expert testimony. Prerequisites: Student must be pursuing a Criminal Justice B.S. Course Typically Offered: Fall.
