Legal Aspects of Forensic Investigations

( 3310) 3 hours. This course examines the legal principles governing forensic investigations, including constitutional considerations, search and seizure, rights of entry, and rules of evidence. Students will explore the distinctions between public and private sector authority, requirements for obtaining search warrants, and the implications of spoliation. Emphasis is placed on preparing investigators to recognize legal limitations, properly document and preserve evidence, and ensure admissibility in court. Topics include criminal and civil liability, expert testimony, discovery, trial procedures, and relevant statutes such as arson-reporting immunity laws. Prerequisites: Student must be pursuing a Criminal Justice B.S. Course Typically Offered: Fall.
