How do stories of mystery, corruption, and justice reveal the social realities of crime? This course invites students to investigate the world of Spanish-language crime fiction through films, short stories, and novels from across the 20th and 21st centuries. We'll examine how writers and filmmakers from Spain and Latin America portray criminals, law enforcement, victims, and systems of power -- and what these depictions reveal about social control, punishment, and resistance. By connecting literary and cinematic narratives to criminological theory, students will sharpen their analytical skills and deepen their understanding of how culture shapes ideas of guilt, innocence, and justice.
