Ruminant Obstetrics and Neonatal Care is a two-week block focusing on advanced peri-parturient health management of the ruminant species, primarily intended for farm animal focus students. Core topics include normal parturition, dystocia management, C-sections, neonatal examination and resuscitation, colostrum management, lung ultrasound, pre-weaning and peri-parturient diseases, vaccination protocols, and abortion investigation. Field visits allow students to apply skills in real-world settings, including colostrum audits, calf and lamb sampling, and herd health procedures. Calving and lambing skills will be taught through a combination of wet-labs, didactic teaching and hands-on farm experiences, as available. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to recognize and address common challenges in calving/lambing and neonatal care, integrating both preventative and therapeutic approaches. Available to senior veterinary students with previous experience in cattle and small ruminant handling.
