Addiction Treatment Theories and Models

Catalog description
This course identifies and examines the theories and models of prevention, treatment and recovery in addictions. While focusing on substance use disorders (SUDs) of alcohol and other drugs (AODs), it also introduces process addictions. The class examines abstinence as well as harm reduction models of recovery and includes medication assisted recovery and pharmacological interventions. It examines psychotherapeutic, family systems, public health, disease, and social models as well as 12-Step programs and other self-help groups and the relationship between these models. There is a focus on social systems and multiculturalism as it applies to prevention, treatment and recovery.
