Open Science in Psychology

Catalog description

This course is an introduction to the Open Science approach to psychology. We will discuss the crises in the field such as the replication crisis, the measurement crisis, or the theory crisis. Using case studies of particular research topics in social/personality and cognitive psychology, we will explore the structural and methodological factors that may be creating false positives within the psychological literature. Topics will include critiques of some popular theories that have failed to replicate, the prevalence of false positives, methodological issues (e.g., use of Null Hypothesis Statistical Testing, a priori power, estimation, study pre-registration), detection of statistical errors and/or falsified data, and steps that can be taken to improve the process of conducting and reporting psychological research.
