Historiography of the Modern Middle East

This graduate course tackles previous and recent developments in the historiography of the modern Middle East, roughly 1750 to the present. It is a comprehensive course that focuses mainly on theoretical shifts, identifying new scholarship, but also leveling critiques and finding gaps in the current literature for future research. At the end of the course, students will be familiar with main texts in Modern Middle East History. They will learn how to read these and other major texts critically. They will be able to take skills learned in this course and apply them to their particular regional and theoretical interests in the Middle East. Students will be asked to read, write, and speak critically about the Middle East field as a whole and comment on specific works and how they fit within the larger canon.
