Citizen and Community Science
North Carolina State University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course examines the field of participatory sciences spanning citizen and community sciences. We progress through three themes with a range of examples and activities. First, we examine how trustworthy scientific discoveries are achieved across participatory approaches to research, management, and conservation in multiple disciplines. Second, we explore human-computer learning collaborations by experimenting with the use of AI in citizen science. Third, we uncover the power of local lay knowledge by carrying out a participatory action research project. The course takes an optimistic yet critical perspective that collaboration between science and society will lead to a stronger democracy and governance of natural resources.
