North Carolina State University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course will use writing to evaluate and critique contemporary design practice. Students will engage in a wide variety of writing forms, including personal essays, case study essays, critique and interviews. Students will also use visual thinking (concept mapping, illustration, visual essays) to explore methods of critical idea generation and to get more comfortable with the writing process. Students will be asked to compare and contrast how certain design theories are understood and applied within the different design disciplines (architecture, graphic design, industrial design, landscape architecture, fashion, fibers and new media) as well as in relation to science and humanity-based disciplines.
