Understanding Social Research

Catalog description

This course introduces students to the social and behavioral science research processes and provides them with foundational research skills to inform their use of research in generalist social work practice. Focus is given to the ethics, standards, and methods of scientific inquiry in social research and evaluation. Particular emphasis is given to the effectiveness of organizational service delivery and social work interventions. It also introduces students to skills needed to search for research reports and to critically evaluate them to answer specific practice questions. Furthermore, the course focuses on skills for integrating information from multiple sources. Social work majors must complete this course with a minimum of grade C.
