Injury and Violence Prevention with Indigenous Populations

Unintentional injuries and violent deaths are among the leading causes of death for US indigenous populations. This course explores injury and violence prevention with a focus on indigenous communities. It addresses the impacts of injury and violence on these communities, the role of historical trauma, and the risk and protective factors. Unintentional injury will be reviewed, including workplace injuries, sports-related injuries, substance use (including opioids), falls in older adults, bike pedestrian deaths, and motor vehicle injuries, among other topics. Along with multiple forms of violence, including child maltreatment, youth dating violence, gender-based violence, sexual violence, gun violence, collective violence, and suicide. This course also covers relevant theories and frameworks, evidence-based treatment, intervention, and prevention strategies.
