Sociology of Education

Catalog description

This course will apply a sociological lens to understanding the various functions of schools as: (1) sites of reproduction of inequalities; (2) sites of resistance; and (3) sites of transformation. Specifically, we will critically examine research that addresses the disparate educational outcomes of students from marginalized backgrounds. Furthermore, we will question the concept of equality in education and distinguish between equality and equity-driven approaches. It is the primary goal of this course to critically evaluate the institution of education, reflect upon the role of school in our own lives, and work to develop actionable steps towards achieving equity within schools.
