Introduction to Non-Profit Management

Catalog description

This course will introduce students to the historical context and distinctive characteristics of the third sector. It will cover the fundamentals of non-profit management, including, but not limited to: board roles; financial accountability; marketing; advocacy; and fundraising. While the course will draw from some theoretical perspectives that shape the third sector, it will place emphasis on practical applications of strategic competencies needed to manage nonprofit organizations. By comprehending the complexity of third sectors issues, students should be able to strengthen not only their capacity as managers to deal with the challenges faced by nonprofit organizations, such as performance measurement and volunteer management, but also their abilities as leaders to carry out the missions of the organizations that they serve. As such, the course is designed to encourage students to consider the nonprofit leadership roles that they may play in their lifetime; executive director, social entrepreneur, director of development, philanthropist or board member.
