Geometric Thinking for Math Teachers

Catalog description
This course examines the development of geometric thinking in grades K-12 from a research-based and theoretical perspective. Multiple instructional approaches, including the use of technology, are explored within the context of learning theories and established frameworks. Core topics include measurement, similarity, congruence, properties of two- and three-dimensional figures, circles, and non-Euclidean geometries. Emphasis is placed on analyzing the ways students construct geometric understanding and on the instructional design and pedagogical strategies that can foster deeper conceptual development across the K-12 continuum. Assignments and instructional applications will be differentiated to address the distinct pedagogical needs and content emphases appropriate for middle grades (6-9) and high school (9-12) mathematics teaching.
