Supporting Multilingual Learners in the K12 Classroom

This course is designed to prepare teacher candidates for teaching students who are learning English as a non-native language (emergent multilingual learners; EMLs), drawing on the funds of knowledge of their emergent multilingual students. We examine how schooling can be subtractive for linguistically-diverse youth, and consider alternatives for transformative resistance. Second Language Acquisition Theory (SLA) is introduced and strategies for teaching specific content areas to ELLs are addressed. This course stresses the practical application of theory and research on language and literacy development in multilingual settings. The importance of developing primary language, culturally-appropriate instruction is emphasized.
