American democracy has stood for 250 years, in contrast to the rest of the world. The average constitution lasts only 77 years, and the four countries that have had the most constitutions since their founding are all located in Latin America and the Caribbean. What makes the United States' long experiment with democracy successful compared to other nations? And what is the relationship between a nation's founding documents and its sense of identity? In ROML 250 , you will analyze the documents and cultural symbols from the United States and several representative Latin American and European countries to answer these questions.
