This course explores Indigenous religions in the Americas. It employs both historical survey and ethnographic methods to introduce diverse beliefs, practices, materials, and locations cultivated by Native American communities. Far from recognizing any boundary between the sacred and profane, it surveys Indigenous approaches gender, spirituality, cosmology, rituals, healing, sickness, human rights, and language, with a particular focus on Nahuatl. Nahuatl or Aztec language is the Indigenous language most spoken in Mexico after Spanish. Studies will also interrogate long legacies of contact with Indigenous communities and European religions in the context of conquest, colonization, revolt, and revitalization.
