University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
This course introduces students to the tools and quantitative methods needed to work with textual data in the age of big data. We will explore how large collections of text (corpora, digital archives, web-based sources, databases, etc.) can reveal meaningful patterns. Students will gain hands-on experience with the R programming language as they learn to clean and structure raw text, apply techniques for visualization and simple statistical analysis, and build models for categorization and interpretation.
