The Psychology of Language Learning Motivation: Why We Keep Going (or Give Up).
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Why do some people fall in love with language learning while others stop after 'hello'? This course explores the psychology of motivation and the factors that shape language learning, including emotion, identity, and educational context. Through global case studies, students investigate how these forces influence persistence and success. Coursework emphasizes hands-on research: designing surveys, analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data, and evaluating the strengths and limits of different forms of evidence. Students will develop projects that explain what sustains language learners and present their findings through clear, audience-ready reports, visualizations, and presentations.
