This course surveys the history of art, music, and performance in Korea from the premodern era to the contemporary one. In the process, it considers how a range of sonic, bodily, and visual forms of expression both linked together and divided a diverse array of populations and communities: those on the margins of society as well as those at its hegemonic center; those looking to such forms of expression as means of critique as well as those looking to them in order to demonstrate their power. There are no prerequisites for the course and no knowledge of Korean is required.
