This course explores changing conceptions of the self and its relationship to society through the lens of biblical interpretation. How do contemporary notions of the self impact our understanding of the Hebrew Bible? What alternatives to the modern self are available in the Bible? What does the history of biblical interpretation have to tell us about the history of the self? The course focuses on close analysis of biblical texts, translation, and the history of Western thought.
