This course explores the long, unfinished struggle for democracy in North Carolina, from the pre-Civil War era to the modern day. Important topics include Emancipation and Reconstruction, agrarian protests, Black disfranchisement and Jim Crow segregation, industrialization and labor protests, campaigns for civil rights and equal citizenship, Latino immigration, and 20th-century politics.
