This course is dedicated to the history of the Mongol Empire and its successor states across Eurasia between 1100-1600. Over the past generation there has been a great renaissance in the study of Mongol-ruled polities from China to Iran and beyond. Historians thus have developed a complex understanding of how Mongol expansion triggered new forms of globalization, whether in terms of long-distance commercial exchange, epidemic disease circulation, state formation, or religious conversion. This course offers an introduction to the study of not just the Mongols, but a host of other Eurasian societies that had to reckon with Mongol power.
