The class begins with colonial contexts before moving to the late Ottoman Empire. After consideration of genocides in Europe in the first half of the twentieth century, the focus shifts to the violence of decolonization and postcolonial conflict. The class also asks whether genocide is a useful category of analysis. Previously offered as HIST 180.
