Technological devices and infrastructures like smartphones, the internet, social media, and artificial intelligence have come to shape virtually every domain of our daily experience and deeply influence the ways in which we think, act, and understand the world. But how did ''the digital'' actually develop into the omnipresent phenomenon and catchword it is today? When and where did it initially emerge and how was it conceptualized over time by theorists, scientists, philosophers, artists, and writers? This course explores the history of digital culture and theory from the 1940s to the present.
