Catalog description

Central Europe was at the center of dramatic transformations of the 20th century: collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, rise and fall of Nazism, transitions into and out of communism, and incorporation into the EU. The course explores the work of writers and filmmakers who depict these turbulent events as they played out in the region's capitals (Berlin, Budapest, Prague) & in lesser-known cities such as Lódz (Poland's industrial center) & the borderland city of Lviv. Taught in English.
