This course provides an introduction to the long history of Central Europe before the modern era. This region--between the Baltic and the Alps and between the Rhine and the Bug--was inhabited by a variety of people speaking Germanic, Slavic, Baltic, and Magyar languages. Moving swiftly through the chronology of major events that continually transformed the political landscape of these territories, we ask: how did premodern legacies shape the modern history of Central Europe?
