This course will use Valerie Bauerlien's nonfiction work, The Devil at His Elbow; Alex Murdaugh and the Fall of a Southern Dynasty, as a framework for exploring the significance and impact of rules governing ethical behavior by government officials and public attorneys. The course will explore common ethical restrictions on such officials, models for enforcing ethical rules, and the potential impact of unethical behavior on the public.
