Catalog description
This course focuses on cartographic and visualization concepts and techniques to convey spatial information. Emphasizing the interpretation and production of both static and interactive maps, the course examines how map design impacts the way maps are perceived and used. Students will explore the cognitive and semiotic processes through which we interpret visual information, as well as core components of map design, including visual hierarchy, color, typography, and layout. Students will critique and design basic cartographic products such as dot, choropleth, contour, and proportional symbol maps using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
