Catalog description

Rivers and streams are not simply passive transporters of terrestrial products, but dynamic, three-dimensional systems that transform and transport, thereby sustaining myriad ecosystem functions and services. The abiotic and biotic components of rivers interact across landscapes via delivery from watersheds, exchange between surface and groundwater, the movement of biota, nutrients, gases, and heat, and other components. Thus, the study of rivers necessitates considering their 3-dimensional connections across landscapes. This course will introduce stream, river, and floodplain: (1) hydrology and geomorphology; (2) fundamental biogeochemistry and measurement techniques; (3) ecology including food webs and community assemblages across landscapes.
