This course explores the intertwined history of people and forests around the world, examining how they have changed over time and how different communities have used, governed, and understood them. We pay special attention to Indigenous stewardship, racialized forest relations, and conservation, as well as the ways societies have established policies governing forests. Students will learn how forest history provides a powerful lens for understanding today's environmental challenges, revealing the links between nature, culture, and production across local and global contexts.
