Catalog description

This course focuses on important poets and poetic trends in the United States in the 21st century. It addresses how poems create space for marginalized, unacknowledged, suppressed, or completely unfamiliar perspectives. The class explores how social and cultural conditions both limit and enable poetic expression; how poets engage in political movements or modes of social critique; and how they work to build community across differences. The course seeks to develop reading skills that are crucial for interpreting poetry; to strengthen writing and oral communication skills; and to develop research skills.
