Introduction to the physical principles that can be used to describe, understand and predict water motion in natural water bodies. Fluids at rest and in motion. Conservation of mass and momentum. Forces that drive and resist fluid motion. Energy conservation. Scaling and dimensional analysis. Principles developed in lectures will be applied to understand water motion in rivers and streams, lakes, and the ocean. Previously offered as EMES 460.
