Catalog description

This course will provide a foundational introduction to the Blue Economy, which has been defined by the US Congress (2024) as: "the sustainable use of marine, lake, or other aquatic resources in support of economic development objectives". The connection between the ocean and economy will be defined though examination of ecological, social, and economic interactions that define the blue economy systems. Lectures will delve into diverse topics such as (but not limited to) trade routes/exploration, NC coastal development policy, wind farms, marine reserves, sustainable fishing, seafood farming, ecotourism, restoration, novel marine sensors, carbon crediting, and venture capital.
